How do I use an e-mail reader for my campus account?

Setting up Netscape Messenger 7.x to use instead of GroupWise Web access

  1. Launch Netscape Messenger and select Window, then Mail & Newsgroups.

  2. In the new window, select File, then New.
  3. In the fly-out menu select Account.

  4. The Account Wizard will walk you through the following steps:
    1. Select e-mail Account.
    2. Enter your name.
    3. Enter your e-mail address: username@ashland.edu
    4. From type of incoming server select IMAP.
    5. The name of the incoming server is gw.ashland.edu
    6. Enter your GroupWise username.
    7. Enter a name for your account.
    8. If your account information is correct, select the Finish button.
    9. If your account information is not correct, select the back button and make the necessary changes.
    10. Single-click on the arrow beside the name of your new account.
    11. When prompted enter your GroupWise password.
  5. Select Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings from the Edit menu

  6. Select Outgoing Server (SMTP) from the left hand list
  7. Enter 9989 in the Port entry box

  8. Click OK

 

Setting up Outlook Express to use instead of GroupWise Web access

 

  1. Launch Outlook Express and select Tools, then Accounts, then Mail.

  2. Click on the Add button and select Mail

    Steps 3-7 are part of the wizard that will
    appear when you add a new mail account.

  3. Enter your name in the Display Name field and click Next.
  4. Enter your e-mail address (username@ashland.edu) in E-mail address and click Next.
  5. Click the down arrow next to My incoming mail server is a and select IMAP. Then type gw.ashland.edu (without the quotes) in the next two fields (Incoming and Outgoing mail server) and click Next.
  6. Enter your username for Account name and GroupWise password for Password and click the Remember password if you wish.
  7. Click Next, then Finish.

 

Changing Outlook Express

If you previously used Outlook Express to read SendMail messages, you can go to step 4 and change the Incoming and Outgoing mail server names from mail.ashland.edu to gw.ashland.edu and then procede to step 8.

  1. Launch Outlook Express and select Tools, then Accounts
  2. Select the Mail tab and then highlight your AU GroupWise account

  3. Click on the Properties button on the right side of the window
  4. Click on the Servers tab
  5. Check the box beside My server requires authentication

  6. Click on the Advanced tab
  7. In the entry box beside "Outgoing Mail (SMTP)" change the 25 to 9989

  8. Click Apply
  9. Click OK
  10. Click Close

Changing the SMTP Port on MAC Mail 10.2 (On Campus Only)

  1. From the Mail menu select Preferences

  3. Click on the Edit button

  4. On the Account Information Tab make sure your account type is IMAP
  5. Make sure your Incoming Mail Server is set to smtp.ashland.edu
  6. Click on the Options button

  7. Set your Outgoing Mail Server to gw.ashland.edu
  8. Enter 9989 in the Server Port entry box

  9. Choose OK
  10. Choose OK
  11. Close the Accounts window

Changing the SMTP Port on MAC Mail 10.3 (On Campus Only)

  1. From the Mail menu select Preferences

  3. Click on the Server Settings button

  4. Set your Outgoing Mail Server to smtp.ashland.edu
  5. Enter 9989 in the Server Port entry box

  6. Choose OK
  7. Close the Accounts window
 

Note : Eudora and other simple e-mail readers work if you change the server setting from mail.ashland.edu to gw.ashland.edu, place a check in the box to Allow Authentication and change your Outgoing Server Port to 9989.
